Last week, the US Census Bureau released their 2022 data on poverty. The results, while not surprising, are certainly disheartening. The Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM), which includes taxes and non-cash benefits like SNAP, shows that the overall rate of poverty in 2022 was 12.4%, up substantially from 7.8% in 2021.

Last week, Governor Shapiro signed the PA state budget bill into law. This budget includes some exciting provisions that will increase food security for Pennsylvania students!
Earlier this week, both houses of Congress passed the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023, a bill that will raise the debt ceiling in exchange for spending cuts, and President Biden has said that he will sign the bill as soon as possible. This bill is the result of weeks of negotiation to avoid the country defaulting on its existing debt, which would have been catastrophic for the economy.
