On September 29, 2015, Governor Wolf signed Executive Order 2015-12, which created the Governor's Food Security Partnership, established to promote coordination, communication, and joint planning between government organizations to better reach those who are at the highest risk for hunger.

On the same day, the governor brought together leaders from non-profit anti-hunger organizations, the food industry, and government to discuss food security in Pennsylvania.

Acme and the Philadelphia Eagles are partnering for the third annual Teaming Up to Kick Hunger campaign to benefit the Coalition! The campaign kicked off at the Thomas' Walk Against Hunger and will run through May 5th.

Shoppers in local Acme stores can purchase a $10 bag of healthy groceries which will be donated to the Coalition's two Green Light Pantries in Philadelphia which provide only nutritious food to those in need.

The Thomas' Walk Against Hunger went out without a hitch on Saturday, April 9th despite a weather forecast that called for chilly temperatures, rain and snow! More than 1,000 walkers showed up to build a public witness against hunger along Martin Luther King Drive. We were reminded once again how powerful the Hunger Fighter Community is in our region!

Throughout the day, people took to social media to spread the word using the hashtag #WalkAgainstHunger. More pictures will come in the next couple of weeks but take a look at some of our favorite posts we found on social media.

Good Morning. My name is Kathy Fisher, and I am the Policy Manager at the Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger. Thank you, for taking the time to consider this very important resolution, to all of its sponsors, and to Councilwoman Blackwell for inviting me to testify today.

The Coalition works to build a community where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives. We connect families with SNAP (Food Stamps) and other food resources, provide food pantries capacity building assistance; and, advocate for policies that improve access to nutrition supports.

One in four people in Philadelphia face food insecurity. An alarming half of the children in poverty — nearly one in five of the city's children — live in deep poverty. The recent economic crisis is still very much a reality for many families in our region.

Working to positively impact this are an estimated 700 Philadelphia food pantries and soup kitchens, which provide food for hundreds of thousands of people each year.
